Shanzi Yao Weddings

May 27, 2007 / by heyvom

I've been busy for couples of days, preparing for something which seems no any chance to me even I pass. Everything's finished. Time to update my blog now.

My mother is Shanzi Yao minority, and I'm half of it, because my father belongs to Zhuang minority. I've been taken part in several Shanzi Yao weddings. The most typical part, I think, is singing folk songs.

My mother has once been invited to be one of the "VIP" by the bridegroom. Before the wedding day, the bridegroom side may need to organize a team who are good at singing folk songs, that is the VIP. These people may with other people to the bride's village to meet the bride. You may definitely wrong If you think that they can enter the village in a walk. The bride's side would also have a VIP team. There will be a debate waiting for you.

Are you ready?

The debate here differs a little from the one you know. They may carry the debate in singing folk songs instead of words. This is also the main role of the VIP. To be one of the VIP team members, the most important skill that you have to obtain is singing folk songs. The judges of the debate are from the bride's side. When will the bridegroom and his team are allowed to enter the village depends on the judges.

To be continued.
